Film Opening Research #1 "Midsommar"

 Midsommar Film Opening

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences of the film?

There are three titles displayed during the opening sequence.

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

There are no specific images prioritized in the opening sequence. That was very purposeful as A24 uses easter eggs to foreshadow the movie rather than normal foreshadowing. However, the main character Dani is prioritized in the opening sequence. It pans from her fighting with her boyfriend to call her boyfriend at dinner.

What connotations do the images carry?

The images in the opening sequence show the main character's lows. The beginning of the film is very dark; little lighting is used. The connotation the images carry is eerie and dark.

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

Midsommar is a dark and twisty movie reinforced by lighting, music, and camera angles. This is a movie meant to be watched many times. Many symbolic codes are used in this film; the interaction between the main character and her boyfriend is a subtle hint of what is to come. The technical codes used are low lighting and camera angles to separate characters.

How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?

The film is a slow burn; during the beginning of the movie, you see the deterioration of the main character. The enigma is the twists from the beginning to the dramatic ending.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The use of easter eggs and twisty gore appeals to the target audience. From the beginning, the audience can pick up on what is to come if they don’t watch too closely. A24 creates horror movies that are not typical and use hidden foreshadowing. The target audience is not a regular horror movie viewer.

How has technology been used effectively? For example, you might want to consider camera angles, transitions, and editing techniques.

Technology is used very effectively in this film. Camera angles and CGI help enforce the slow-burn horror. The camera zooming in on the upside-down festival sign foreshadows the opposite of what the characters thought it would be. Additionally, low lighting shows the depression the main character had at the beginning of the film.
