Film Opening Research #2 - "Annabelle Comes Home"

 How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences of the film? 

There are four titles displayed at the very beginning of the film. All of the titles deal with production and studio companies. 

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? 

The doll is prioritized as an important figure in the opening sequence. The movie begins with the camera panning out from the doll to show the whole scene. 

What connotations do the images carry? 

The image displays the critical role the doll will play throughout the film and the role it has played in previous films. Annabelle is one of the most known figures in the Horror film scene. 

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? 

This film is drenched in horror, from the low lighting to the dark clothing that the Warrens wear. The genre is reinforced through minor aspects like lighting, wardrobe, and camera angles. The technician codes used to establish this movie as a horror films are the camera angles and opening credits being dark and eerie. The character's discussion of the fear in the voice of the people who had the doll establishes something to fear about this inanimate object. 

How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?

The film establishes the enigma by slowly panning the camera out from Annabelle's face to the whole setting. The audience is invested in what will happen to Annabelle. But more importantly, what will happen to the Warrens who now have Annabelle. 

 

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? 

There is a large audience of horror viewers, especially ones who like Annabelle movies. Just beginning with the doll and seeing that the Warrens have the doll engages the viewers. The Warrens are very well-known in the horror world. By using these two characters, the audience is involved. The chilling video work rather than straight horror and gore appeals to its target audience. 

How has technology been used effectively? For example, you might want to consider camera angles, transitions, and editing techniques. 

The movie is set in the 60s, so the limited editing and technology enforce the film's setting. The use of camera angles and transitioning reinforces this film's chilling slow-burn horror. The horror is very drawn out, and transitions from the doll to the Warrens are used.

Master Edits in a Professional Film Audio

Intro:  1. Throughout my intros and cuts I decided to not add any sound because I couldn't find any sound that would be good to tie together all the shots. Symbolism:  2. Post Synchronization Dubbing: For these scenes I chose to use random noises because I couldn't think of any sound to put over the clips. Simultaneity: 3. Post Synchronization Dubbing: For the first scene where I show me missing the trash can I used a booing noise because I wanted it to seem like people were booing me because I missed. Then in the next shot I include people cheering because I picked up the litter instead of leaving it there. Contrast:  4.  Post Synchronization Dubbing: For the first scene I chose to include thunder over me yelling trying to look tough because that way it would seem like I was powerful and strong. Getting Started With Camera Angles

Close shot: This shot was complicated because we didn't want it to be confused with a cameo shot, so we tried to get Chris in between the two colors. Full Shot: This shot was easy because she was just standing there and I recorded a video of her just standing. Cameo shot: For this one we just used the first solid colored wall we could find and used it.  Over the shoulder: In order to get this shot I had to wait for Chris to film her shots that way I could get an over the shoulder shot. Head on shot: For this shot it was pretty easy to just have Chris walk towards the camera as if she is walking through it. Tilt shot: This shot was another very easy one to film because it requires me to stand still and tilt the phone up. Close up: This was another easy shot to film because I just grabbed the first thing I could find. Pan Shot: For this shot I just took a video as I stayed in one place and moved the phone.
